The US Customs Has Found Clothes Made Of  Banned Chinese Cotton

Nearly 27 percent of shoes and clothing tested by U.S Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in May had traces of cotton from the Chinese region of Xinjiang which has been banned due to worries about forced labor. according to the documents published by Reuters through the FOI Act.

The findings, which have not previously been disclosed, illustrate the difficulties of following U.S. legislation that seeks to block imports of cotton associated with forced labor in China, which requires cutting out Xinjiang from apparel supply chains.

Isotopic testing is a way for customs officials to link cotton to certain geographic areas by looking at the concentrations of stable elements, such as carbon and hydrogen, in both the cotton and the environment where it was grown, according to experts.

Ten of the 37 clothing items collected by CBP in May came back as “consistent” with Xinjiang. So far, CBP has collected at least 3 batches of shoes and clothing as part of its enforcement efforts.
