Heavy rain has caused flooding in Hong Kong, inundating streets, shopping centers, and metro stations in the densely populated city. Schools in Hong Kong were closed on Friday and workers were urged to stay indoors as torrential rain continued to lash the area.
It was the highest hourly rainfall in the Chinese special administrative area since records began in 1880. The Hong Kong Observatory recorded 158.1 millimeters of rain between 11 p.m. (H.K. time) on Thursday to midnight on Friday.
The weather bureau has issued the highest “black” rainstorm warning and reported more than 200 millimeters of rain on Hong Kong’s main island of Kowloon and parts of the city’s New Territories from Thursday night.
Trough of low pressure from the remnants of typhoon Haikui continues to bring heavy rain to Guangdong’s coast since Thursday, according to the weather bureau. The severe weather is expected to continue until Friday at the latest.
